Last December I visited Athens for the first time. And I already know, it won’t be for the last time.
On the first evening I went up Lycabettus hill, which is the highest point in central Athens. This immediately gave me an amazing overview of the topography of Athens; something I generally enjoy when visiting new places, just getting up to a higher point and assessing what I want to see next.

As it was my first time in Athens, I had to visit the Acropolis. Getting there early is probably a good idea, as it started to fill up with more visitors around 11am. But at that point I was already on my way in the general direction of the sea. I did however spend a lot of time going there, finding some great motifs on the way.

The general atmosphere of Athens is rather unique, at least for me. There are many old buildings in various states of decay and depending on the part of the city additionally covered in graffiti. If you’re into that sort of thing, you could probably spend hours just photographing the facades on one street.

Which is true for the whole city, at least for me. I also underestimated the share scale of Athens. I feel like there are many different neighbourhoods to explore, something I’m already looking forward to for my next visit.
